Reviving Khao Lak: The Award-Winning Casa de la Flora

Architect Vasu Virajsilp's Unique Design Breathes New Life into Tsunami-Stricken Area

In the wake of the devastating 2004 Tsunami, architect Vasu Virajsilp sought to revive the Khao Lak community in Thailand with his unique design, Casa de la Flora. This design, which won the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018, is a testament to the power of architecture in healing and community building.

The inspiration behind Casa de la Flora is the act of 'arising flora'. Each of the 36 cubic-form villas, made of concrete and wood, emerges from the ground, blooming to reach the daylight. The deviated walls and tilted roofs are not only reminiscent of blooming flora, but they also widen the rooms' perspective frames when looking outward to the sea.

What sets Casa de la Flora apart from other designs is its eco-friendly credentials. Local materials were used in its construction, and the swimming pools use an ozone purification system, which requires fewer chemicals. Additionally, the resort practices waste-water and rainwater recycling, further minimizing its environmental impact.

The resort, which is a member of Design Hotels, includes a reception lounge, swimming pool, pool bar, beachfront restaurant, spa, fitness center, and library. It serves as a high-profile yet humble destination hotel, aimed at attracting tourists and reviving the local economy.

The interiors of the rooms, including the Casa Presidential Suite, are done out in teak, with custom-made furniture by Anon Pairot. The villas feature stone walls, grass roofs, cloistered wood decks, private pools, and floor-to-ceiling windows, offering breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea.

The project, which was designed in 2008 and completed in 2011, was a collaborative effort. The landscape design was done by TROP, and the element design was done by Anon Pairot Studio. The stunning visuals of the resort were captured by photographer Wison Tungthunya.

The Golden A' Design Award is granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. Winning this prestigious award is a testament to the extraordinary excellence of Casa de la Flora, and its significant impact on the world with its desirable characteristics.
